Social Emotional Learning (SEL)

HPA Social Emotional Learning (SEL) classes are designed to support students' cognitive, behavioral and emotional wellbeing. The curriculum is focused on developing Emotional Intelligence and strengthening Executive Functioning Skills. Emotional Intelligence helps to understand, use, and manage emotions in positive ways to relieve stress, communicate effectively, empathize with others, overcome challenges, and defuse conflict. Developing Executive Functioning Skills provides students with tools to help with task initiation, impulse control, time management, flexible thinking, self-regulation, organization, working memory and focus to support students’ academic and social success.

Gardening

The students are enjoying the new green areas immensely and it is used during lunch, play and Salah times, Alhamdullilah! Houston Peace Academy is sincerely grateful to all the contributors who stepped up to outer play area upgrade. A Zikr Garden for the students was completed during the second phase where planter boxes have been installed with one planter box allotted to each grade. School gardens can make lasting differences in the lives of children. The lessons taught through these outdoor learning laboratories transcend gardening to impact children, their families and entire communities for years to come. Schools that have garden programs incorporated into their science curriculum score significantly higher on science achievement tests than students who are taught by strictly traditional classroom methods.
